The Blob (1958)

Dec 10, 2019, 01:30 PM

When Mike fails his Wasteland Safety test, an emergency viewing of The Blob is ordered to teach the store's employees how to survive against the horrors of the post-apocalypse.

The Wasteland can be a scary place. We've all witnessed terrible things out here -- sand dunes swallowing whole caravans of people you love; Ptera-People ripping the limbs off of your best friend; and of course, the scariest of them all, gelatinous balls of goo enveloping your girlfriend after you just made it to second base at Lookout Point. With all of these terrible things lurking the wasteland, safety and awareness is paramount.

So, you can imagine my shock when a certain Apocalypse Video employee who shall not be named (well...let's just say his name rhymes with "Like") showed a complete lack of knowledge of the monsters that exist in the Wastes. How can this individual have survived so long without knowing how to properly defeat a Wampa snow monster when it comes out of its cave to eat you whole?!

Thankfully, Apocalypse Video has a smart and safety minded manager at the helm -- yours truly: David Snider. And joining me as we screen The Blob for tips on wasteland survival are fellow cinephiles and dangers to themselves, Ryan Caldwell and Michael Althouse.

Listen as we discuss a film that flirts with Ed Wood levels of cheesiness; we learn that teenagers are a menace and NOT to be trusted; and finally, we witness the screen debut of Steve McQueen, the world's oldest looking teenager.
