Show #992

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 13th February. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

SK INNOVATION LOSES CASE WITH LG CHEM, FACES BAN

"The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) on Wednesday sided with South Korea's chemicals and electric vehicle (EV) battery maker LG Chem Ltd, which accused its crosstown rival SK Innovation Co Ltd of misappropriating trade secrets related to EV battery technology." says Autoblog; "The ITC said it was issuing a limited 10-year exclusion order but would permit SK to import components for domestic production of lithium ion batteries, battery cells, battery modules, and battery packs for Ford Motor Co's EV F-150 program for four years, and for Volkswagen of America's MEB electric vehicle line for the North America region for two years. The ITC said the decision would allow the automakers to transition to new suppliers for these programs. SK Innovation is building two EV battery factories in Georgia to manufacture batteries for us in Volkswagen and Ford electric vehicles. LG Chem has set up an EV battery cell venture plant with GM in Ohio."

TESLA RANGE ESTIMATES CALLED INTO QUESTION IN INDEPENDENT TESTS

"Tesla range estimates are called into question in new independent tests by Edmunds showing that Tesla’s vehicles don’t hit their EPA estimates." says EV website electrek: "Edmunds tried to compare the EPA ratings of 15 electric vehicles, including five Tesla vehicles, against real-world range. Edmunds was unable to achieve the EPA range on any of the Tesla vehicles, while they beat the EPA range by some decent margins in other electric vehicles."

What is the EPA methodology? Asks Edmunds: " First, the vehicle is fully charged and parked overnight. The following day, the vehicle is driven on a dynamometer — it's like a treadmill for cars — over successive simulated city and highway routes until the battery is depleted. The total distance traveled is then multiplied by a correction factor that the EPA has determined will more accurately reflect what drivers can expect to achieve in the real world. The value of this correction factor, which is always less than 1 but greater than 0, is determined by the number of drive cycles a vehicle is tested on. In short, there's certainly a method to the EPA's madness, but the process is laboratory-based, and EV owners don't drive their cars in a lab"

2022 MERCEDES EQS SPIED WITH LESS CAMO TO REVEAL LIFTBACK LAYOUT.

"new images reconfirm the flagship EV to carry to the three-pointed star will technically be a liftback rather than a sedan as the traditional range topper from Daimler Mercedes-Benz." reveals Motor1.com: "Then there’s the general shape of the EQS as it is significantly sleeker than the S-Class Sedan by going for a coupe-like roofline in the same vein as the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, which also happens to be a liftback. "Riding on the new Electric Vehicle Architecture (EVA), the 2022 Mercedes EQS will be a follow-up to the Vision EQS concept unveiled in September 2019 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

MERCEDES-BENZ EQA IS A SLICK, COMPELLING ADDITION

Zach at Cleantechnica describes the Mercedces-Benz EQA as a: "freakin’ appealing electric crossover. It should make many a Mercedes fan happy to join the electric revolution, assuming that Mercedes builds enough of these to meet demand. In January 2021, 13.7% of new automobile sales were sales of plugin vehicles, nearly 7% were due to Brits buying fully electric vehicles. The market is growing fast, and premium-class buyers will increasingly desire the new hottest tech and will demand fully electric powertrains. Mercedes has brought an attractive option to market for those on the lookout for a small/medium-sized, luxurious crossover."

UK prices start at £40.495 after you take off the PiCG

DETROIT DIESEL IS GOING ELECTRIC

"In a sign of the times, a brand that's known for its diesel engines is pivoting to become the supplier of e-axles for Freightliner's trucks. Detroit Diesel will manufacture electric powertrains for the upcoming Freightliner eCascadia semi truck and Freightliner eM2 medium-duty truck, according to a press release from Daimler Trucks, parent company of both Freightliner and Detroit Diesel." says Green Car Reports: "The Detroit ePowertrain will be available in a single-motor configuration with 180 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque, and a dual-motor version producing 360 hp and 23,000 lb-ft of torque. The eCascadia and eM2 will also be offered with three battery-pack sizes—210 kwh, 315 kwh, and 475 kwh—using prismatic lithium-ion battery cells. Daimler estimates a maximum range of 230 miles for the eM2 and 250 miles for the eCascadia tractor."

TIME FOR EU TO SET NATIONAL TARGETS FOR EV CHARGERS

We, the undersigned, call for the European Commission to urgently review the Alternative

Fuels Infrastructure law and propose an ambitious regulation rather than a directive, and to

set binding national targets for all vehicle segments.

Changing this into a regulation would:

- Help harmonize the common market for zero emission road transport across Europe,

from re-charging and re-fuelling standards, to payment methods, to tariff transparency to

maintenance and more;

- Allow for swift implementation to align with the fast-growing ZEV market given that

transposition into national law of a directive can take multiple years;

- Grant the framework to cover the areas where most re-charging will happen in the

immediate future (i.e. charging in public parking facilities like supermarket parking lots).

TESLA MUST RECALL 12,300 MODEL X CARS OVER PARTS THAT COULD FALL OFF

"Tesla must recall around 12,300 Model X cars worldwide over body molding problems, Germany's motor vehicle authority (KBA) said on its website. KBA said the recall affects cars built in 2015 and 2016, adding there was a risk that the molding could fall off the vehicle." reports Autoblog. And CNET says: "Back in November, the automaker said it would recall some 9,500 Model X SUVs in the US for faulty roof trim adhesive following a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation. It's unclear if this is the same exact piece that the KBA references"
