Show #571

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 5th September 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

MERCEDES-BENZ EQC GETS FIVE-STAR SAFETY RATING FROM EURO NCAP

Euro NCAP released the safety ratings of seven car models including Mercedes-Benz’s first electric SUV the EQC.

The EQC turns out to be very strong in adult and child occupant safety:

Adult Occupant - 96%

Child Occupant - 90%

Vulnerable Road Users - 75%

Safety Assist - 75%

"Mercedes-Benz enters the all-electric market with the fully-electric compact luxury SUV EQC. This is the first of Daimler’s EQ range, and its rating augers well, with a five-star rating and good all-round performance. The EQC is part of a growing trend towards battery electric vehicles and joins Jaguar’s I-Pace and Audi’s e-tron amongst the cars that Euro NCAP has tested, and Tesla’s Model X, which will be assessed later this year.

MERCEDES-BENZ TEASES EQS ELECTRIC SEDAN

"Mercedes-Benz moves forward with its Mercedes-Benz EQ electric subbrand by teasing a new model ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show. It appears to be the EQS, which would be an all-electric S-Class counterpart. Electric luxury without compromises." says Motor1.com: "We already saw a few reports about the EQS coming, including spy photos of a camouflaged prototype, but there are no details. For sure we can expect long-range and specs even better than in the case of the Mercedes-Benz EQC - the first in the EQ lineup. 500 km (310 miles) of WLTP range would be a must we guess, just like at least 150 kW charging."

TESLA TRANSPORTS MODEL 3 RHD UNITS TO PHILADELPHIA PORT FOR FASTER UK TRANSIT

"Several semi-truck loads of Tesla Model 3 right-hand-drive (RHD) vehicles are on their way from the company’s headquarters in California to the Port of Philadelphia for transit to UK customers. This alternative route of travel will reportedly provide quicker delivery times than the usual path that takes the all-electric cars around the western part of the country via the Port of San Francisco and through the Panama Canal. Tesla’s strategy could help increase its Q2 2019 delivery numbers and possibly provide cost savings from the shorter delivery distances traveled." reports TEslarati: The quicker transit looks to save about two weeks from Tesla’s shipping time, as detailed in a report published by XAutoWorld. The usual San Francisco to the Port of Zeebrugge (Belgium) route is around 10,600 nautical miles with an average shipping time of 24 days, depending on a few variables. The distance from Philadelphia to Zeebrugge is about 4,000 nautical miles with a travel time of around 10 days."

HYUNDAI MOTORSPORT OFFERS SECOND SNEAK PEEK AT FIRST EV RACE CAR

"Hyundai Motorsport is really excited about its first electric car envisioned for racing and released a second video teaser ahead of its unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 10." writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "The teaser is focused around the power and electricity, which probably heralds hundreds of kW of power and some crazy performance.

The video description says:

"He's always said the Hyundai i30 N TCR was like his child.

And now he's created a monster!

FIA WTCR winner Gabriele Tarquini gives life to the first Hyundai electric race car.

All will be revealed on September 10 at IAA in Frankfurt."

MCLAREN RULES OUT ELECTRIC HYPERCAR BECAUSE IT WOULD BE TOO HEAVY

"McLaren has dabbled in electrifying its vehicles before. Remember the P1, McLaren’s limited-edition plug-in hybrid? It’s pictured above. McLaren built 375 examples over about two years and has yet to return to the battery-powered performance. That doesn’t mean McLaren isn’t exploring alternative powertrain options." according to Anthony at MOtor1: "In a new interview with Motoring.com.au, Jamie Corstorphine, McLaren’s global marketing director, said the company is exploring a fully electric offering; however, the company wouldn’t produce one until it could promise it’d be a better sports car. It doesn't want to offer one simply to meet new emission standards or another benchmark. That means McLaren’s pursuit of lightness won’t go away with an electric hypercar. "

LAMBORGHINI UNVEILS SUPERCAR WITH SUPERCAPACITORS

"Lamborghini has its “most powerful car ever produced,” the Sián, and they did so by creating a novel hybrid powertrain with supercapacitors. Supercapacitors are unlike electrochemical batteries. They can charge and discharge in just seconds, but the drawback is that most of them have low energy density and can’t store enough energy to be viable for a product like an electric car." writes Fred at Electrek: "Lamborghini, who hasn’t been quick to adopt electric technology, has been at the forefront of using supercapacitors in its supercars. Now the Sián is the latest example of how the automaker is adopting the technology by being “the world-first application of a supercapacitor for hybridization.”

Lamborghini says this of their supercapacitor: "It is three times more powerful than a battery of the same weight and three times lighter than a battery producing the same power. Located in the bulkhead between cockpit and engine it ensures perfect weight distribution. The electric system with the supercapacitor and e-motor weighs only 34 kg, thus it delivers a remarkable weight-to-power ratio"

HONDA E TO APPEAR IN 2 VERSIONS – UP TO 220 KM RANGE

"Honda will present its first electric model for the European market in serial production at the IAA and is teasing photos of the final version in advance. Furthermore, the Japanese manufacturer stated they plan to mention previously unknown details." says electrive: "The electric motor of the Honda e will be available in two power ratings of 100 kW and 113 kW, with a torque of 315 Nm each. The 35.5 kWh battery is intended to provide a range of up to 220 kilometres – Honda had previously mentioned 200 kilometres. The technical data, however, are still internal data of the manufacturer. With these key data and the CCS rapid charging capability, the Honda e certainly offers more than sufficient driving performance for its intended purpose as a commuter vehicle. Honda currently estimates fuel consumption at 18 to 20 kWh per 100 kilometers – even the more powerful BMW i3, which is less aerodynamic due to its height, achieves better values."
