The Other Side of the World
This is a thrilling 90 min audio drama based on real events, which takes the listeners behind the scenes of the launch of Whickers World and how the BBC nearly triggered WW3.
It is 1958. BBC Tonight reporter Alan Whicker, having recently filmed stories for the show in Sudan and Aden approaches producers Donald Baverstock and Alasdair Milne with the idea of filming a series of stories of social interest from the other side of the world.
After pitching the idea to Head of Television Talks, Leonard Miall, the idea turns into a reality.
Alan, cameraman Cyril Moorhead and sound recordist Freddie Downton set out on a 30,000-mile world trip, crossing five continents while filming more than forty different reports, each one flown back to London for film editor Jack Gold to shape into stories for the nightly show.
