Explained: How to win a Premier League Golden Boot

Season 8, Episode 5,   Sep 09, 2021, 05:22 PM

The latest Squawka Talker podcast goes beyond the goals to find out how to win a Premier League Golden Boot winner.

Host Feargal Brennan is joined by Squawka's Muhammad Butt and Jake Entwistle to look back over some of the Premier League's greatest goal-scorers since 1992 in their quest to find an answer.

How many goals do they need to score? How many games do they need to play? Do they need to take penalties? Is a match-ball a must? Does it matter how they score? And should they still be passing to their team-mates?

The team also look at this season's race with returning duo Romelu Lukaku and Cristiano Ronaldo going head to head against the current dominant duo Harry Kane and Mo Salah.

*EDIT* - Thierry Henry did not win the Golden Boot when also providing 20 assists in 2002/03, he was one goal behind Ruud van Nistelrooy. Jake got a bit excited, but the average of 7.6 assists per Golden Boot winner means the general chat remains the same.

*EDIT* - Duncan Ferguson holds the record for most headed goals in a Premier League with 9 during the 1997/98 campaign. Dwight Yorke's 8 headers is the most scored by a player that also reached 20 goals in the same season.
