Composition by Catherine Boulle.
"An old hand mixer grinding away, the precise revolution of its beaters soon to be phased out and then forgotten, put me in mind of the last recorded conversation I had with my grandmother as I leaned over the metal bars of the bed where she lay – and would soon die – in her old age home. Her body frail and her voice barely audible, the visit was mostly filled with murmurs and silence, until she noticed the warmth of my hands.
"In making this short piece, I imagined the whirring of the mixer like the grinding of her thoughts, drawing to a slow halt. And her voice a sound that, too, will one day fade from memory."
This is part of the Obsolete Sounds project, the world’s biggest collection of disappearing sounds and sounds that have become extinct – remixed and reimagined to create a brand new form of listening. Explore the whole project at https://citiesandmemory.com/obsolete-sounds
