In this third conversation with Daniel Ryan (“That Family Law Guy”) on Revolutionise Your Love Life, Heather speaks to Daniel on how UK family court proceedings affect children during divorce and separation. Daniel describes two common harms: children either knowing far too much about parental conflict or being kept entirely in the dark for months or years. Together they discuss the absence of emotional considerations in legal processes, the limits of current social work input, and orders that unintentionally make children “live out of a suitcase.” They consider better approaches such as collaborative, multi-disciplinary models that put children’s needs first and keep them appropriately informed. Practical guidance is offered for parents on protecting children’s sense of home, continuity, and belonging throughout proceedings.

Key Takeaways:
Children need continuity and a sense of home. Frequent moves and split days satisfy adults but erode a child’s stability.

Appropriate inclusion beats secrecy. Keeping children completely uninformed breeds anxiety and confusion; share age-appropriate updates.

Court is one-dimensional. It applies law, not emotion; outcomes often neglect the lived experience of children.

Design schedules around the child’s week. Prioritise school routines, rest, friendships, and unhurried time with each parent.

Aim for collaborative solutions. Multi-disciplinary, therapeutic approaches can protect children better than adversarial processes.
