The Reiners Had No Legal Options — The 60-Year Failure That Left Them Defenseless

Before 1967, Rob and Michele Reiner could have petitioned a court to commit their son. A hearing lasting less than five minutes. No appeal. Nick would have been transported to a state psychiatric hospital and held indefinitely until doctors deemed him safe.
That option no longer exists. California eliminated it sixty years ago. And two people are dead because nothing ever took its place.
This episode is different from our usual coverage. Instead of focusing on what Nick allegedly did, we're examining why his parents were powerless to stop it. We trace the history of California's mental health system — from 37,000 patients in state hospitals at the 1950s peak, through the Lanterman-Petris-Short Act of 1967, to today's reality where fewer than 1,500 people are on involuntary conservatorships statewide.
We explain the 72-hour hold that became a revolving door. The "gravely disabled" standard that doesn't include violence or danger. The fact that families cannot initiate conservatorships — only hospital staff can. And the cruel irony that by providing Nick with food, clothing, and shelter in their guest house, Rob and Michele may have disqualified him from the only intervention that could have saved their lives.
The Reiners reportedly spent vast sums on treatment. More than a dozen rehab programs. The best doctors available. And none of it gave them the authority to force their adult son into long-term care.
Nick is finally in a system that will hold him. It just took two bodies to get him there. The question nobody wants to ask: How many other families are trapped in the same nightmare right now?
