How Did Forensics Link Rex Heuermann To Two Victims Found Years Apart?

Two women. Two locations forty miles apart. Eight years between discoveries. And forensic anthropology that connected the tool marks on their remains to the same type of instrument — the same characteristics, years apart. This look back examines the forensic thread that ties Valerie Mack and Jessica Taylor together in the Rex Heuermann case, and what it reveals about the pattern prosecutors built across the full span of the investigation.
Valerie Mack was a Jane Doe for twenty years — found in Manorville in 2000 and along Ocean Parkway in 2011, identified only through genetic genealogy in 2020. Jessica Taylor was twenty years old, found in the same two-location pattern — Manorville in 2003, Ocean Parkway in 2011. A hair on Valerie's remains matched the DNA of Heuermann's family members. A hair on a surgical drape beneath Jessica's remains matched Heuermann's own DNA. The planning document recovered from his computer included preparation notes that prosecutors say matched the condition of both women's remains.
Heuermann pleaded guilty to both murders as part of the agreement covering seven victims, and admitted to an eighth. His defense attorney acknowledged that two pre-trial rulings — the admission of DNA evidence and the denial of separate trials — drove the decision to plead. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting. Valerie waited twenty years for a name. Jessica was found twice over eight years. The forensic connection between them is where this case's full scope begins to come into focus.
