She called him her savior. Their daughter says she believes he most likely committed the killings. Same nightmare, opposite conclusions — and that split tells you everything about how denial works and where it breaks. This look back, with psychotherapist Shavaun Scott, examines the psychology inside the Heuermann home after a guilty plea forced the collapse of everything a family believed was real.

Asa Ellerup maintained she would have known if something was wrong. Prosecutors alleged Heuermann engineered his crimes around his family's schedule — acting when Asa and the children were away. Investigators reportedly recovered detailed checklists and violent content from his devices. Asa's own hair was reportedly found on victims. And yet, according to her account, for nearly three decades she saw nothing. After the plea, she told reporters her thoughts were with the victims' families and asked for privacy.

Scott breaks down the psychology behind "not knowing" — how the mind builds invisible walls around information that would destroy the identity you've constructed. Why someone whose entire sense of self is anchored to one person may be psychologically incapable of seeing who that person is. And what happens to the architecture of denial when a guilty plea — an admission in open court, in the defendant's own words — removes the last piece of ground to stand on. Victoria Heuermann reached a different conclusion before the plea ever came. Scott examines what allowed the daughter to see what the wife couldn't. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting.
