Prosecutors allege David Anthony Burke killed Celeste Rivas Hernandez on April 23, 2025. Two days later, he released his debut album. He launched a world tour. He stood on stages across the country performing for fans who, according to investigators, had no idea what was allegedly behind the scenes. Then on September 8, a tow-yard worker in Los Angeles called police about a foul odor from an impounded Tesla registered to Burke. Inside were Celeste's remains. According to the timeline, Burke took a stage in Minneapolis the following night.

This look back, with retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, examines what that alleged post-crime behavior reveals about the kind of person investigators believe they're dealing with. Coffindaffer reads the behavioral profile — what it takes to allegedly carry something this extreme while functioning publicly at the highest level, what the gap between the public persona and the alleged private conduct indicates, and what it means that people in Burke's circle reportedly believed the fourteen-year-old girl from Lake Elsinore was a nineteen-year-old college student.

Coffindaffer also raises serious questions about evidence handling — specifically LAPD's reported decision to hold the Tesla containing Celeste's remains for only forty-eight hours before releasing it, and what that means for the integrity of the physical evidence. Burke faces first-degree murder with special circumstances, additional charges related to the victim's age, and a count related to the condition of her remains. He has pleaded not guilty. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting.
