Patrick Clancy took the stand today in the murder trial of his wife, Lindsay Clancy, the Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling their three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She has pleaded not guilty and is mounting an insanity defense, with attorney Kevin Reddington arguing she was in the grip of severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication at the time of the killings.

Patrick testified he came home to find his wife outside the house, bloody and broken — she'd allegedly just jumped from a second-story window in an attempted suicide that left her paralyzed from the waist down. He then went inside and found his three children in the basement. There's no version of that walk-through that doesn't stay with a person. He didn't editorialize on the stand. He didn't need to. Prosecutors let the sequence of events do the talking, and it landed exactly the way they wanted it to.

The defense isn't disputing what Patrick found. They're disputing what was happening in Lindsay's mind when it happened, which is its own kind of brutal argument to sit through as the husband and father. Prosecutors are expected to argue Clancy understood the nature of her actions despite the defense's mental-health claims. Patrick has since relocated to Manhattan and spoken publicly, including to The New Yorker, about his wife's mental health leading up to that day. The trial, underway in Plymouth Superior Court, is expected to run several weeks.
