Why Bryan Kohberger Can't Be Saved By His Family

On July 27, 2026, Bryan Kohberger filed a handwritten petition for post-conviction relief in Ada County District Court. He's representing himself. He calls his guilty plea coerced, his former defense team ineffective, and the state's account of the Moscow murders "a work of fiction."
Anne Taylor, Elisa Massoth, and Bicka Barlow — the court-appointed attorneys who spent more than two years keeping him off Idaho's death row — are now named in his filing as the problem. Their work is the most valuable thing anyone has ever done for Bryan Kohberger, and he repaid it with a petition and a phone call to a newspaper.
His family found out the way strangers did.
But this is not a piece about the petition's merits. It is an open letter to the family that rebuilt Bryan Kohberger from a stolen phone and a rehab discharge into a functioning adult with two degrees. To the mother who flew to Boise and sat in a gallery while victims' families spoke. To the sister who keeps four birthdays in her calendar that aren't her own. To the family that still follows instructions from a man behind reinforced glass.
The letter traces the pattern from its earliest visible point — a nineteen-year-old selling his sister's property for cash and warning his father not to call the police — through a courtroom walkout, daily video calls nobody ordered, a birthday cake with specifications attached, and a petition filed without the courtesy of a phone call home.
The argument is that letting go is not the same as giving up. That decency has a finish line. And that whatever door they've been holding open stopped leading somewhere a long time ago.
