Lindsay Clancy's Screening Score Went No Further

A screening result is only worth something if it travels. Lindsay Clancy scored 23 out of 30 on a ten-question postpartum screen administered by a nurse practitioner in November 2022. Her outpatient psychiatrist testified she never requested records from other providers. McLean Hospital obtained none either.
Three children died in Duxbury on January 24, 2023. Every count drew a not guilty plea. The killings are not what the jury has to decide. Her attorney says postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder are why she is not criminally responsible. Prosecutors argue she should be held criminally accountable for intentional acts.

The first part is the illness — how rare it is, how it moves between disorientation and clarity, and where psychosis parts company with psychopathy.
The second is the clinicians. Fourteen video appointments and no in-person visit. A McLean psychiatrist who testified she had encountered none of these cases. A patient who was herself a labor and delivery nurse and was taken at her word by everyone.
The third is bipolar disorder — raised by a nurse practitioner in 2022, ruled out by a psychiatrist for lack of mania, and recorded on the McLean discharge as major depressive disorder, severe, without psychotic features.
Shavaun credits what worked too, including a nurse practitioner who handed Clancy her personal cell number. Neither accepts liability in the civil suits.
The nurse practitioner who administered that screen, Julie Paul, launched South Shore Hospital's perinatal program in 2018 and saw Clancy for about ten days before leaving for another position. Clancy's lawsuit says a Columbia psychiatrist later diagnosed bipolar disorder with psychosis after an eight-hour evaluation.
