The Line That May Decide the Fernandez Murder Trial

Both sides rested on Day 7 of Mario Fernandez's trial for the murder of Jared Bridegan. The defense called two schoolteachers and Fernandez chose not to testify. Closing arguments followed the same afternoon.

Prosecutor Stifler told the jury that alleged gunman Henry Tenon had no motive, no means, and no connection to Bridegan. Fernandez had all three. The trust clause, the checks, the phone gaps, and the January visit to the man who once owned a 10mm Glock all point to one man. Dreicer told the jury the prosecution was asking them to fill in gaps the evidence doesn't support and that the state's own witnesses couldn't place Fernandez at the scene.

In rebuttal, Mizrahi asked whether Fernandez gets to walk away because he paid someone else to commit the crime. His final line to the jury: this defendant is not the unluckiest man on the face of the earth — he's just guilty. Deliberations begin Wednesday morning after jury instructions.
