For generations, cattle have been a symbol of wealth, identity and social status in South Sudan. However, in Rumbek, Lakes State, livestock is increasingly connecting pastoral communities to wider economic opportunities. At Malith Cattle Auction Market, herders sell prized animals to meet household needs, pay school fees and fulfill social obligations. In nearby kraals, cattle remain central to daily life, despite challenges in treating livestock diseases. With more than 36 million cattle, sheep and goats, the sector holds significant economic potential.
