Six weeks of testimony. Thirty-eight hours of deliberation. Eleven jurors believed Lindsay Clancy was not criminally responsible due to postpartum psychosis. One did not. The mistrial was declared September 4.

The case is over. The fear it exposed isn't.

Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott, author of Nightbird, joins Tony Brueski for a conversation about what the Lindsay Clancy trial is actually testing in the people watching it. Why mothers are recognizing something in this case they've never talked about. Why the word "monster" is a psychological shield and not a conclusion. Why the public treats a brain illness differently from a heart attack when both can end lives.

Shavaun addresses the woman listening right now who experienced frightening thoughts after having a baby and has never told her partner, her doctor, or her closest friend. When the public conversation around this trial turns compassion into a character flaw and honesty into a risk, she explains what that silence means for the next mother in crisis.

The trial asked whether Lindsay understood what she was doing. This conversation asks whether the rest of us understand what we're doing to each other.
