Shavaun Scott Explains JP Miller’s "Protection" Story

Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott is front and center in this look at the JP Miller case, because the most revealing part of the allegation may not be the surveillance itself. It may be the explanation. Federal prosecutors say Miller told agents he had Mica Miller watched for her own safety. Shavaun Scott explains why clinicians often see that as a classic form of carewashing — coercive behavior dressed up in the softer language of help, concern and protection. 

The same frame helps explain the second half of the story: the unraveling of Solid Rock Church. Public reporting says the ministry controlled roughly $5.59 million in property and assets in late 2023, after years of tithes and expansion fundraising. Within a year, the church and school were closed, the main building had sold for $2.15 million, and former insiders were publicly saying they never saw full financial records or even knew about some of the assets attributed to the ministry, including multiple vehicles and an airplane. 

The federal indictment, returned in December 2025, charges Miller with cyberstalking and making false statements. Prosecutors allege that from November 2022 until Mica’s death in April 2024, he engaged in unwanted contact, interference with her finances and daily life, tire damage, nonconsensual posting of an intimate image and tracking devices placed on her vehicle. Miller has pleaded not guilty, denies wrongdoing and has not been charged in Mica’s death. The criminal case is set for the October 2026 trial term. 

Shavaun Scott’s point is that institutions can absorb the language of a controlling person and start repeating it back as fact. Once that happens, concern for the target gets filtered through the controller’s story. 
This episode combines the federal allegations with the money trail and the ministry collapse to ask a harder question: when a church tells itself that surveillance is protection and opacity is normal, how much damage can be done before anyone finally calls it what it is?
