Mica’s Law Was Still Stalled When JP Did WHAT?!

Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski to connect two parts of the Mica Miller story that are usually discussed separately: what Mica left in writing and what JP Miller’s life looked like after she was gone. Scott starts with the behavioral question — how coercive control can be experienced as an everyday system of pressure even when each individual act looks too small or too scattered to trigger the law. 

Mica’s family says her journals and diaries described forced medication, unwanted injections and severe sleep deprivation. Her police contacts also documented allegations involving tracking and harassment. JP now faces federal charges of cyberstalking and making false statements. Prosecutors allege unwanted communications, financial interference, tire damage, an intimate image posted without consent and tracking devices placed on Mica’s vehicle. He has pleaded not guilty, denies wrongdoing and has not been charged in connection with Mica’s death. 

The family’s legislative answer has been Mica’s Law. South Carolina SB 702 would criminalize coercive control and broaden the state’s response to patterns involving psychological and financial domination. The bill stalled in 2026. Scott explains the practical consequence: when the law only reacts to isolated events, the target can spend years describing a pattern that everyone hears but no agency owns. 

JP married Suzie Skinner in June 2025. Her former husband Chris Skinner, a U.S. Army veteran and quadriplegic motivational speaker, died in September 2021 after being found unresponsive in a neighborhood pool. His death was ruled accidental. His family has publicly questioned that conclusion, and the case has reportedly been revisited. No one has been charged in his death, and JP has not been charged in connection with either death.
 
Friends featured in Netflix’s Death of the Pastor’s Wife alleged JP and Suzie were involved earlier than JP has acknowledged. JP denies an earlier affair and has said they began dating in January 2025. Scott examines the psychology of that public reset without treating disputed relationship claims as settled fact.
