Bryan Kohberger's Sealed Filing Revealed WHAT Before Plea?!

Bryan Kohberger's post-conviction case now includes a document the public did not have when he pleaded guilty. The newly unsealed filing says his former defense lawyers told Judge Steven Hippler that Kohberger was having trouble rationally processing adverse rulings and understanding how those rulings changed the risk of going to trial. 

His lawyers asked for additional time and expert assistance so they could communicate with him about major case decisions, including whether to testify or resolve the case with a plea. They expressly denied that Kohberger was legally incompetent. Hippler denied the additional time, and six days later Kohberger admitted guilt to four first-degree murders and burglary. 

Kohberger's new attorney Greg Rauch is now using that sequence as part of a broader effort to remove Hippler from the post-conviction case and challenge the plea. Rauch says the timeline does not automatically prove the plea was invalid. His argument is that it raises a factual issue about whether Kohberger had enough time and expert assistance to meaningfully participate in the decision. 

Kohberger's family has now entered that fight publicly. His parents and sisters say they support his effort to obtain post-conviction relief and want the full truth aired through a trial. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Tony Brueski to examine the family system around that decision, including what public support can mean when a convicted relative reverses course and claims his confession was false. 

Kohberger is serving four consecutive life sentences without parole plus ten years for burglary. The court will hear his request for a new judge and venue on October 15, 2026, and the post-conviction evidentiary hearing is scheduled for June 17, 2027. The sealed filing does not answer whether the plea survives. It gives the court one more record to test against what Kohberger swore to when he entered it.
