Caleb Flynn Trial Day 6: Defense Attacks Wilhelm’s Digital Evidence Reliability

Special Agent Joseph Wilhelm returned to the Caleb Flynn trial under cross-examination, and the defense aimed directly at the digital evidence extracted from the iPhones. Defense questioning framed that evidence as unreliable, challenging how much confidence jurors should place in the phone data presented by the state.

Wilhelm, a cyber crime investigator specializing in digital forensics, previously testified about extracting data from Caleb Flynn’s phone after an initial extraction method was unsuccessful. His earlier testimony included app deletions, incognito-browser artifacts, Apple Watch information and other digital activity. On cross, the defense’s point was broader: digital artifacts still have to be interpreted, and the defense wants jurors questioning whether the phone evidence is dependable enough to support the prosecution’s theory.

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty in the murder of his wife, Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors allege he killed Ashley and staged their Tipp City home to resemble a burglary. The defense maintains Ashley was killed during a home invasion and investigators rushed to blame Caleb.

The defense challenged the reliability of the digital evidence; based on the testimony details available here, that should not be confused with Wilhelm conceding that the evidence was unreliable. That distinction matters when jurors decide what weight to give the phones.
