Caleb Flynn Closing Arguments: What Does the Evidence Actually Prove?

The Caleb Flynn trial reached the point where the same record became two very different stories for the jury. Prosecutor Matthew Joseph told jurors the evidence against Caleb becomes overwhelming when they stop isolating each item and consider the case as a whole. Defense attorney L. Patrick Mulligan told them the opposite: the State still had not proved Caleb killed his wife, Ashley Flynn.

Caleb, 40, has pleaded not guilty to 11 charges, including aggravated murder, in Ashley's February 16, 2026 death at their Tipp City, Ohio home. Prosecutors allege Caleb killed Ashley and staged the scene to resemble a home-invasion burglary. The defense maintains that a burglar killed Ashley and investigators rushed to judgment against Caleb.

Joseph's closing asked jurors to connect the evidence rather than demand that any single piece carry the entire case. Mulligan attacked that approach at its foundation. He emphasized that the State's case is circumstantial and argued that the prosecution proved Caleb had an affair, but did not prove that he murdered Ashley.

Mulligan put the responsibility where it ultimately belongs in a criminal trial: with the jury. “You make the call,” he told them.

This episode puts those competing closing arguments together: the prosecution asking jurors to see one complete picture, and the defense asking whether that picture actually proves who killed Ashley beyond a reasonable doubt.
