What Alex Murdaugh’s Cop Friend Did at the Crime Scene

Witnesses are reportedly telling a statewide grand jury that Yemassee Police Chief Greg Alexander had the Murdaugh murder weapons in his possession in the immediate aftermath of the June 7, 2021, killings at the family’s Moselle estate. FITSNews reported the investigation on September 25, 2026.

Maggie Murdaugh was killed with a .300 Blackout rifle. Her son Paul was killed with a 12-gauge shotgun. Alex Murdaugh was convicted of both murders in 2023. Neither weapon was ever found.

Alexander is not the only officer under scrutiny. The Post and Courier reported that a second, unnamed Yemassee town policeman is also being investigated. Both are accused of transporting weapons and bloody clothing into the Yemassee police department the morning after the murders.

Alexander’s own attorney acknowledged that his client was at the crime scene on the night of the killings. The Moselle property sits outside Yemassee’s jurisdiction.

The financial ties between Alexander and the Murdaugh family are documented. Alex Murdaugh wrote Alexander a $5,000 check approximately one month after the murders. Alexander said the money was a loan for his parents. Murdaugh family members and allies contributed $5,500 to Alexander’s campaign for Hampton County sheriff.

During Alex Murdaugh’s first trial, Nathan Tuten — who worked as a runner for Murdaugh’s law firm — testified that Alexander was present during some of the cash deliveries Tuten made to Alex’s office.

In 2012, Alexander was indicted by a statewide grand jury for stealing nearly $11,000 in seizure money from motorists. He went to trial in Hampton County with the Murdaugh family in his corner. He was acquitted and eventually rose to chief of police.

The prosecution convicted Alex Murdaugh at the first trial using shell casing evidence, gunshot residue on a blue raincoat, and digital data — without the physical weapons. The retrial is scheduled for April 2027.

Alexander has not been charged. His attorney, Joe McCulloch, calls the allegations absurd.
