Prosecutors told a jury in 2023 that Alex Murdaugh hid both murder weapons at his parents' home in Almeda. Police searched three months late and came up empty. A grand jury is investigating whether the weapons went somewhere else entirely — into the hands of Yemassee Police Chief Greg Alexander. Alexander has called Alex a ‘longtime friend.’ The Murdaugh family backed him through a misconduct indictment. He was at the Moselle crime scene the night Maggie and Paul were killed. Alex wrote him a $5,000 check after the killings, and Alexander couldn't keep his story straight about when it was written. Witnesses have allegedly testified before the grand jury to seeing both guns in Alexander's possession. He denies all of it. On September 30, Murdaugh's defense alleged in a Brady motion that the state sat on a witness statement about Alexander and the weapons since 2023. The retrial begins April 5.
