Why Matthew Farwell's DNA Changes Nothing for Prosecutors

Matthew Farwell is not the father of Sandra Birchmore's unborn son. A paternity test settled that. Federal prosecutors in Boston are going to trial anyway on a theory that the man who allegedly strangled her believed he was, and that the belief is what cost her her life on February 1, 2021.

Sandra was 23 and eight to ten weeks pregnant. She told Farwell the baby was his. Prosecutors say his messages through that winter show he accepted it, and that she had contacted attorneys about paternity, custody and support while he was a married Stoughton police detective about to have a third child with his wife. She died the day before that child was born.

There is a second piece prosecutors lean on hard. On January 20, 2021, a friend of Sandra's called the Stoughton Police Department and reported Farwell's relationship with her. Prosecutors say a department employee told Farwell about the call, and that he responded with a run of angry messages. Twelve days later Sandra was dead.

Eric Faddis, defense attorney and former prosecutor, joins Tony Brueski on how prosecutors explain a motive the DNA contradicts, and what the defense does with that same test.
