The strongest thing Matthew Farwell has going for him is five years of the state of Massachusetts agreeing with him. The medical examiner ruled Sandra Birchmore's death a suicide in May 2021. She changed it to undetermined on April 30, 2026, after federal prosecutors charged Farwell with strangling Sandra in her Canton apartment and staging the scene. Her neck is the fight: the government's experts say the hyoid fractures and the position she was found in fit strangulation more than hanging; the defense's pathologist says he can't tell how she died but can't rule out hanging. A magistrate judge refused Farwell bail in May 2026 and called the evidence very strong, if not overwhelming, after prosecutors said his DNA was on the strap around her neck. Retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer and Tony Brueski weigh whether 'can't rule it out' buys reasonable doubt when prosecutors say her phone shows she stopped moving while he was still in the apartment.
