I was just reading this http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/05/15-green-apps-for-your-new-apple-ipad.php and thought this thread be a good place to throw it.
I can only speak for myself and how i use/explore tech in my job but all consumption will be bad for the environment. Society is made that way and in a strangely ironic way I would not know anything about the impact if it wasn't for the communication through these devices. I use free energy where i can to reduce my impact. I have the ipad charging off solar as i type this. We need more investment in the technologies that help us lessen the impact that is for sure. I think @hannahnicklin has looked into this more and may know more about the overall impact. The question is way too big for my knowledge base.
SO. I finally HAVE to ask. I know you have your super-cool mobile solar-power devices and all. But regarding The iPad I always wonder : dosn't readig texts on screen increase emissions? Because to me it seems that there is a whole industry trying to sell things which need electricity. Which at first seem handy- but then again we need more and more energy-saving stuff. Like I hear that buying a cd is maybe more climate-friendly than the download, cause somewhere some server is running constantly with the music files etc.. There was something that Greenpeace published. "the IT industry's appetite for energy will increase, making it a major source of climate change unless the industry adopts and advocates renewable energy use and backs laws to cut global warming" http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/press/releases/ipad-launch-forecasts-a-cloud/. I can imagine Ipads needing less energy than using a laptop. But there seems TO BE the trend of devices running constantly_____ . And so the energy consumption increasing. Whereas resources are getting less and less; the usage of alternative energy not advanced enough to replace energy we ALREADY are used to consume. I just thought that your generation - having their own children by now- might care about the prospects of future generations and I wonder what you think about the whole issue. :) Because for me- knowing very little about the facts- it seems so contradictory/confusing. Less resources /more consumption(?).

Ah I also have fond memories of the old CB radio as a kid. You might be interested in CB for the Iphone. Search for iPTT in the app store. Its not that good but I think its free.
