It's not so much how many votes they need to win a seat, it's how many votes they got per seat... Nationally. Individual seats will be won by a certain number of votes - that's the same for all parties, but nationally Lib Dems must get a lot of second places. For example if a party came second with 49% of the vote in every single seat, and two other parties got either 50% or 0% - those parties would have all of the seats between them but about 25% of the national vote each, whereas that one would have 49% of the vote and have no seats at all.
It does need a shake-up. my constituency (which is a huge region) gets one conservative seat, whereas the Hull region gets 3 (Labour) seats. Even tho I hate Cameron... he did win (%) so Clegg is doing the right thing, even though I don't see how the two parties will merge on policies. Will have to wait and see I guess!

From "The Last Goon Show": The leadership of the Conservative Party is yours
From "The Last Goon Show": Grytpype-Thynne tells Moriarty to place his head on an anvil, followed by a clang, and screams of pain from Moriarty. Grytpype then says: "now, taste this margarine". Moriarty complies. Grytpype says: "There. Can you tell the difference?". Moriarty: "No". Grytpype (triumphantly): "You see! You can't tell the difference between a lump on the head and margarine. The leadership of the Conservative Party is yours for the asking!"
