    • Whatsofunny I USED TO DO BALANCE AND ROTATIONS AT AN AUTO SHOP. BUT I FELT LIKE I WAS JUST SPINNING MY WHEELS SO I DECIDED TO RETIRE What’s so funny about this? To really get this joke, you pretty much have to grow up in a car culture. You don’t necessarily have to be an auto mechanic, you just have to have been around cars and have driven most of your life. I’m not mechanically inclined and I’m lousy with my hands, so I’m a real sucker when it comes to both buying and repairing cars. Nevertheless, I’ve been driving since I was 16. I learned on an automatic (I’m referring to the transmission, the part of the car that transfers power and energy from the engine to the wheels by means of gears). But to be a REAL man, you had to know how to drive a stick. Yes, I’m still talking about cars. A stick is not only a piece of wood. It’s also the slang term for a manual transmission where you have to change gears by hand with a gear shift (the stick), instead of letting the car do it automatically. I managed to learn that when I was 19. BTW, of my two adult children, only one can drive a stick. This joke is being told by a pro, someone who actually fixed cars for a living. She or he worked on the tires and wheels doing balance and rotation. And you thought this person was a ballerina, I’ll bet. It’s true that dancers have to do balance and rotation too, but in this case it refers to making sure, the wheels are aligned and that the tires don’t have too much worn out rubber. If the wheels are not balanced and they are worn, then the car will pull to one side when you drive and you could have an accident and/or the tires could blow out. As you can imagine, to spin and adjust tires all day long is not a very challenging job and it’s easy to get bored quickly. There is an actual expression, “to spin your wheels” which means to put a lot of effort into something that produces no result. And that’s what happened to the person in the joke she or he was spinning their wheels spinning someone else’s wheels. That’s why they decided to retire. But does this mean that they quit working, or did they just decide to put on a new tire? I guess we’ll never know. And THAT’s what’s so funny!
