Muriel Clayson, teaching staff at the former Worcester Royal Infirmary's Nursing School explains about her nursing costume from Guy's Hospital after completing three years of training @GMMedicalMuseum @InfirmaryWorc #OralHistory.

"...and the third year, when you had completed this goodly schedule, you earned strings which went under your chin and most people thought they were attached to the cap, but they weren't, they were separate. They went under and pinned on top of your head, and they were two pieces of white which you had to put together and stitch to make the bow. And there was a great point of honour to get your strings. When you were given your strings, the first time from Matron's office, you took the strings to the ward sister who you preferred, had been nice to you probably and wouldn't mind, to make up your first pair of strings."
