Muriel Clayson, member of teaching staff at the former Worcester Royal Infirmary's School of Nursing, explains how her costume changed during her fourth year of training at Guy's Hospital @InfirmaryWorc @GMMedicalMuseum #OralHistory

"...in the fourth year we had a mauve belt, that was an acting staff nurse belt, just petersham, no buckle, didn't have buckles at Guy's, not even the sisters, because of infection [...] Um, the fourth year we would be proper staff nurses, if we were considered suitable for a staff nurse's post, it wasn't a sort of automatic thing, you did apply. And then, when you had completed your fourth year you got a Guy's badge. You could wear your Guy's badge. And it was a black belt..."
