How did the people of #Lancashire react to the outbreak of #WW1 ? - Interview with Historian Dr Corinna Peniston-Bird

Dr Corinna Peniston-Bird from #Lancaster #University History Department explains how people from #Lancashire reacted to the outbreak of #war and what impact the war effort had on the Home Front.

Hundreds of ordinary men from across North Lancashire volunteered to go to war in the summer of 1914 and joined the King's Own Royal Regiment based at Bowerham barracks in Lancaster.

Many of these men joined after being inspired by the heroes who returned from the Boer War as they had been paraded during a rally in Dalton Square in Lancaster.

Meanwhile, propaganda also played a huge part in inspiring men across the North West to go to war in #1914.

However, the war didn't just have a huge impact on the men that were sent off to fight in the conflict.

Dr Corinna Peniston-Bird argues that the impact of the war on the Home Front and the stories of the people that were left behind in North Lancashire is often forgotten.

Dr Peniston-Bird tells The Bay's Amy Scarisbrick how the people of #Morecambe and Lancaster reacted to war and how it changed the lives of thousands of local people forever. Audio is property of The Bay/CN Group and has been uploaded for portfolio purposes.
