Photographer - Kasia Wozniak

Season 1, Episode 39,   Jun 12, 2019, 06:00 AM

For episode 39, I’m joined by the outstandingly brilliant photographer, Kasia Wozniak.

She discusses discovering wet plate collodion photography, capturing her imagination and teaching herself the process from Victorian manuals in the British Library.

For those of you unsure - wet plate collodion is a camera/photography process, from around the 1850s. A big wooden box, a lens and black piece of cloth at the back. You have to prepare chemicals on either glass or aluminium plates in complete darkness before loading them into the camera. If capturing people, depending on the light, they will need to sit still for a period of time to ensure they register more than just a blur.

Taking us through the process and the challenges it presents, Kasia shares how she uses this technique in fashion photography and portraiture often resulting in feeling like the camera itself, is a time machine.

Kasia is wonderfully generous and curious about people and it is evident in her photographs.  Her connection with her subjects slowly reveals itself the more time you spend looking at her imagery. Her photos have a precarity that gently lures you in and before you know it, you’ve lost hours completely mesmerised going from one image to the next.
