Ep8: Putting Care At The Core - Tim & Steph from Avallen

Season 2,   Oct 12, 2020, 03:00 AM

What does it take to leave what on paper looks like the best job in the world? Why would you want to turn your back on life in 1st class seats, five-star hotels and Michelin star restaurants?

This week the Mojo Podcast investigates the mojo behind entrepreneurialism - the burning desire to step out of a corporate role and to create something of your own. And I have not just one amazing guest, but two. As my guests this week decided to join forces and share their entrepreneurial journey.

Steph Jordan and Tim Etherington-Judge are the co-founders of Avallen - a Calvados from Normandy in France. We talk about their journeys of self-discovery that led to the birth of this award-winning brand. Avallen has been recognised with multiple awards including ‘Green Launch of the Year’ at the Drinks Business Green Awards as well as a Design Master at the Spirits Business Design & Innovation Awards and Worlds Best Speciality Calvados.

Speaking of awards - Steph has just been named Woman Of The Year at the prestigious Drink Business Awards. From London to Bogota, with a sip of Burgundy in between, Steph is the creator and professional powerhouse behind Drinking Out Loud - the luxury wine and spirits consultancy www.drinking-out-loud.com and a strategic consultant at Yellow Global  http://makeityellow.global/

Tim Etherington-Judge is the founder of Healthy Hospo, co-founder of Avallen Spirits, and co-founder of Lassou.  A hospitality professional with more than twenty-five years’ experience at all levels of the industry - from tourist-spot coffee shop, to chef, award- winning bartender, bar manager and global ambassador for some of the world’s most recognisable brands.  As well as advising and consulting on sales and marketing, he has helped develop both new and established brands in this most competitive of sectors, including Bulleit American Whiskey, Ketel One Vodka and Johnnie Walker.

After a severe mental health breakdown in 2016, Tim left Diageo to set up Healthy Hospo @HealthyHospo his own not-for-profit company dedicated to building a healthier, happier hospitality industry around the world. His work in changing the conversation around health and wellness in the industry led to him being recognised as the 10th Most Influential Person in the Global Bar Industry in 2019. We talk about Tim's experience with depression and about attempting suicide. So, there is a content advisory here for that reason.

If you are in need of help or know someone who does - in the UK, the Samaritans can be contacted on 116 123. In the US, the National Suicide Prevention Hotline is 1-800-273-8255. In Australia, the crisis support service Lifeline is on 13 11 14. Please don't suffer in silence, you are not alone.

We are giving back in this episode - with the offer of a 90 minute business coaching session with me - on offer to anyone listening who is just embarking on their own entrepreneurial journey or who runs a start-up and would benefit from some extra help.
Drop me a short email to richard@mojodevelopment.co.uk - telling me a little about your business and how coaching could help you. I'm really looking forward to supporting you in your quest.

AND we are also offering a bottle of gorgeous Avallen to anyone who leaves a review of the episode on Apple Podcasts. Write your review and also add it to my Instagram grid of this episode - @mojorichard - so I know it's you and I can get in touch.
These reviews really help more people discover the Mojo Podcast.
