An Exploration of Curmudgeons Day

Season 1, Episode 62,   Jan 29, 2021, 04:07 PM

Grouches rejoice! Or, rather, continue simmering in your sour stew. No one can tell you to “cheer up” or “stop being so glum” today!

Curmudgeons Day, observed annually on January 29, is one of the sillier days that I’ve included on the Weird Holidays & Observances page. But what’s its story? Who started it and why? And what is a curmudgeon exactly?

In this episode, I explore the unlikely origins of Curmudgeons Day. (Can you believe it pays tribute to a comedian?!)

I also take a look at 12 popular curmudgeons from pop culture, and I share some newspaper articles I found about other days devoted to grouches as well as a band called Curmudgeon's Day.
