The UN Special Representative to South Sudan has outlined a three-year strategic plan to help South Sudan build durable peace at local and national levels.
In a briefing to the UN Security Council on Monday, SRSG Nicholas Haysom highlighted five key elements of the vision, including supporting the peace process, deploying unified personnel and strengthening of the country’s justice system.
“First, South Sudan is fortunate in having concluded a multistakeholder peace agreement to guide its transitional path. Second, we commit to making optimal use of our uniformed personnel to enhance general security, but also allow for the urgent and necessary delivery of humanitarian assistance. Third, is the civil-political engagements at the grassroots level. This also highlights the significance of the fourth component – a strong and well-developed justice chain, and finally, the Mission intends to enhance collaboration between international partners including the IGAD, AU, EU, Troika, neighboring states, and the diplomatic community in general.
