BF Who Ate GF's Heart & Brain, Now Claims Rights Were Violated | True Crime Today

In 2014, a man killed his ex-girlfriend and ate parts of her body. He is currently serving a life sentence for the crime.

According to court records, Joseph Oberhansley's attorneys filed an appeal to his life sentence on May 31. It is reported that Oberhansley underwent a competency exam in 2017 and was diagnosed with schizophrenia or a general psychotic disorder. He spent eight months in a mental health facility after being declared unfit for trial. Despite withdrawing his insanity plea two months after his release, his attorneys still filed a motion claiming he was incompetent for trial.

Oberhansley previously served 13 years in prison in Utah for killing his child's mother and shooting his own mother and himself. Oberhansley was seriously injured, but his mother survived.

According to the appeal, Oberhansley and Blanton started dating in spring 2014 and moved in together in June. According to reports, Blanton went to work on Sept. 8 feeling "as if she had been raped over the weekend by Oberhansley."

The following night, Blanton broke up with him and stayed with a friend. She changed the locks on her home after he went to her workplace the next day.

During the early hours of Sept. 11, Blanton called the police to report Oberhansley pacing between the front and back doors and attempting to enter the home. Police responded and Oberhansley left.

A man claiming to be Blanton's brother answered Shepherd's phone that morning, though Oberhansley's voice was familiar to Shepherd. One of Blanton's friends called Shepherd, who then called the police. Upon arriving at Blanton's house, officers saw Oberhansley with a cut on his hand and a brass knuckle in his pocket.

Upon entering Blanton's house, officers found a "big bloody mound of something in the bathtub," which turned out to be Tammy's body. The appeal reports that she was stabbed multiple times, and that the front part of her skull was missing, as well as part of her brain.

Oberhansley reportedly described visions and feeling tingly while speaking with police.

Later, he confessed to eating Tammy's heart, saying he had "demons coming out of him."

Dr. Heather Henderson-Galligan met Oberhansley on Sept. 18, 2014, and they met for five sessions. In 23 years of practice, she had never seen such sickness.

Oberhansley was found guilty of murder and burglary, but acquitted of rape at his trial in September 2020.

Attorneys for Oberhansley contend that his right to due process has been violated, and they are asking the court to "remand his case to the trial court with an order to impose a term of years."
