Two teenagers now face murder charges in Las Vegas for a horrifying act of violence targeting a bicyclist. The authorities disclosed this shocking incident during a press conference on Tuesday, shedding light on a series of tragic events that transpired on the morning of August 14.
Las Vegas police have linked the two teenagers to a string of at least three hit-and-run incidents on that morning, ultimately culminating in the tragic death of 64-year-old Andreas Rene Probst. Probst, a former police chief from Bell, California, met his untimely demise in what can only be described as a disturbing and callous act.
The chilling incident was captured on video recorded from the front passenger seat of the teenagers' vehicle. The footage unfolds with Probst cycling along the side of a nearly deserted road near the curb. As those inside the vehicle laugh, the car approaches Probst from behind, then swerves violently toward him, striking his bicycle head-on. The impact sends Probst hurtling onto the car's hood and crashing through the windshield. The last frame of the video shows Probst lying motionless on the ground beside the curb.
Deputy Police Chief Nick Farese did not mince words when he addressed the disturbing video, labeling it as appalling and characterizing the act as "cowardly."
Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson has taken a personal interest in the case and has declared his intent to charge both teenagers as adults. However, he refrained from disclosing their identities at this time, stating that justice will be served in due course.
At the Tuesday press conference, Taylor Probst, the victim's daughter, delivered a tearful tribute to her father, known affectionately as Andy. She described him as a man of honor and integrity who dedicated over 35 years to a career in law enforcement. In her emotional address, she expressed the profound devastation her family feels over the senseless murder of her father, emphasizing that "Andy's life was robbed by two individuals who did not believe that lives of others matter."
The investigation took a significant turn when the 17-year-old driver was arrested on the day of the crashes, initially facing traffic-related charges related to the fatal hit-and-run incidents. However, it wasn't until several weeks later that a school resource officer provided investigators with the video evidence, leading to the elevation of charges to murder for the driver. This discovery also triggered a police search for the passenger who was present in the video. The second teenager was apprehended on Tuesday.
According to the police, the horrifying spree of vehicular crimes began just before dawn when the teenagers struck a 72-year-old bicyclist before fleeing the scene and subsequently crashing into a Toyota Corolla. Remarkably, the driver of the Toyota emerged from the collision without injuries, as reported by the police. The extent of the injuries sustained by the initial bicyclist was not detailed.
Shortly after colliding with the Toyota, the teenagers targeted Andreas Rene Probst as he was riding his bicycle in a designated bike lane. They fled the scene, leaving Probst gravely injured and stranded by the side of the road, their laughter echoing in the background, as recounted by Deputy Police Chief Farese.
