The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy moved into some of its hardest testimony yet, as three first responders recounted what they walked into at the family's Summer Street home in Duxbury, Massachusetts on January 24, 2023. Clancy, 34, is accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise resistance bands. She faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, has pleaded not guilty, and her defense, led by attorney Kevin Reddington, is arguing she was in the grip of severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.
Duxbury firefighter-paramedic Patrick Dwyer testified about trying to resuscitate Cora and getting her to the hospital. Fellow Duxbury paramedic Jennifer Stratton described performing CPR on baby Callan. And Pembroke's Robert Costanzo told jurors about treating Clancy herself, giving her Narcan on suspicion of an opioid overdose — Narcan that, notably, does nothing for benzodiazepines, which he wasn't trained to address. Clancy never woke up from it. On cross-examination, Costanzo conceded he missed the spinal fractures Clancy was later found to have, and that his entire window with her — roughly seven minutes — wasn't enough time to gauge how badly her neck and wrists were actually hurt.
Prosecutors maintain Clancy understood the nature of her actions regardless of her mental state. She allegedly attempted suicide afterward by jumping from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was running errands at the time of the killings and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial continues in Plymouth Superior Court and is expected to last several more weeks.
