The message was identical for all of them. The friends who left Nolan Wells on Horn Island with his phone. Their families. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office. The district attorney. The coroner. The state medical examiner. Every one of them received a ten-page preservation-of-evidence letter from Nolan's family attorneys on July 20 — the same day Nolan was buried at Center Pointe Church in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.The letters directed every recipient to suspend automatic deletion, preserve all materials in their original form, and treat civil litigation as reasonably anticipated. The message was clear: we are coming, and you need to keep everything.Nolan was eighteen. He went to a July 4 boat party on Horn Island with friends, was reportedly left behind when their boat took on water, and his body was found two days later. The sheriff said no foul play before the autopsy came back. The DA sealed the official results behind a grand jury with no set date. The independent autopsy returned undetermined.Nine days after the funeral, Christine Wells-Wonsley filed subpoenas against five tech companies for Nolan's digital records — including GPS data that she'd already found told two different stories depending on which app you checked. The criminal track and the family's civil track are now running simultaneously.
