How Nolan Wells' Medical Examiner Helped A Deputy Walk

In 2021, a twenty-nine-year-old Black man named Damien Cameron was restrained by Rankin County sheriff's deputies and transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Mississippi's chief medical examiner, Dr. Staci Turner, performed the autopsy. Her own findings documented internal bleeding in his neck consistent with compression injuries. She ruled the death "undetermined."Three national forensic pathologists — including former NYC chief medical examiner Dr. Michael Baden and Rutgers forensic pathology chief Dr. Zhongxue Hua — independently reviewed the case at the request of the New York Times and Mississippi Today. All three concluded the death was a homicide. A grand jury relied on Turner's ruling and declined to indict the deputies. One of them — Hunter Elward — is now serving federal time for the "Goon Squad" torture cases.That same medical examiner performed Nolan Wells' autopsy on July 7. Those results remain sealed. The independent autopsy came back undetermined with significant limitations. And the family's attorney — Ben Crump — is the same attorney who represented Cameron's family and now represents Trey Reed's family in another disputed Turner ruling.Even a perfect autopsy from this office, in this framework, won't be believed. That's not the family's fault. That's what happens when institutions lose credibility and nobody in power fixes it.
