What Lindsay Clancy's Actions That Morning Prove

Two people, two very different amounts of help, and one comparison the internet keeps making that doesn't actually hold up. Nick Reiner told reporters he went through somewhere around seventeen rehab stays between age fifteen and twenty-two, all arranged and paid for by his family, plus a yearlong conservatorship. He's now charged with killing his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, and has pleaded not guilty. Lindsay Clancy, a labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General, sought care once, in December of 2022, and was discharged from a postpartum program after a single day.
She's now on trial in Plymouth Superior Court for killing her three children, and this week's testimony didn't make the picture simpler. Patrick Clancy spent two days on the stand. Jurors heard his 911 call. First responders described the scene. Then prosecutors set nine prescription bottles in front of the jury — most of them still holding pills — directly undercutting a defense built around a woman overwhelmed by medication.
Prosecutors also keep returning to a twenty-five-minute errand and a takeout order, asking jurors to weigh whether either one fits with a woman too sick to know what she was doing.
Tony Brueski breaks down why stacking these two cases together as the same story is exactly how neither gets fixed — one person given nearly two decades of intervention, one given a single day, and both families now living with the same unanswerable question about who could have stopped it. Reiner has pleaded not guilty and no motive has been officially confirmed. Clancy's jury has not returned a verdict, and prosecutors argue she acted intentionally and should be held criminally responsible.
