The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy is underway in Plymouth Superior Court, and the diagnoses on the table just multiplied. Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, is charged with killing her three children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 7 months — allegedly strangling them with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. She then allegedly tried to take her own life by jumping from a second-story window, an injury that left her paralyzed from the waist down. She's pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. Her defense, led by Kevin Reddington, rests on an insanity claim built around severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.

The prosecution's rebuttal witness had a different diagnosis in mind entirely. Dr. Avram Mack, a psychiatrist who reviewed Clancy's medical records and evaluated her in April 2026, told jurors that assessing someone's mental state requires looking at who they were at the time of the act itself. He described a patient who showed no interest in her hygiene, the hospital's food, or the other patients around her — though she did have visitors on occasion. Mack noted she's taking numerous psychiatric medications, all at low doses.

His diagnosis: a major depressive episode within major depressive disorder. Not bipolar disorder — he testified he saw nothing in her records pointing to mania or hypomania. And notably, not postpartum psychosis either, which is the diagnosis the defense has built its entire case around.

Patrick Clancy, her husband, was running errands when the killings happened and has since moved to Manhattan. The trial is expected to continue for several more weeks.
