Lindsay Clancy Trial: Forensic Psychologist Says No Signs of Psychosis Were Ever Reported

The insanity defense in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial took another hit — or held its ground, depending on who you ask — as forensic psychologist Dr. Kirk Heilbrun returned to the stand as a prosecution rebuttal witness. Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, is accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. She faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, has pleaded not guilty, and is being defended by attorney Kevin Reddington on grounds of severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.

Reddington resumed his cross-examination after a morning recess, still pressing Heilbrun on why he's never written specifically about postpartum psychosis, and running through a symptom list that Heilbrun agreed matched postpartum depression — all of it symptoms Clancy had reported. Heilbrun clarified on redirect that the same symptoms also apply to major depressive disorder, general depression, and bipolar II, and said he'd received more information on this case than any other in his career. He also drew a distinction that mattered: Clancy wasn't thought broadcasting, she believed her own vivid, unwanted thoughts were somehow heard by others. Then came the part prosecutors clearly wanted on record — Clancy never disclosed to any provider that she wanted to harm her children, repeatedly denied suicidal ideation, and had no observed or reported psychotic symptoms. On re-cross, Heilbrun testified there was no evidence she lied, faked, or malingered any of her reported mental health issues or suicidal thoughts.

Prosecutors are expected to argue Clancy understood the nature of her actions despite the defense's mental-health claims. After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted to take her own life by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out of the home running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial, underway in Plymouth Superior Court, is expected to last several weeks.
