Lindsay Clancy Would Trade Nurses for Guards

Three and a half years of hospital care ends the moment a guilty verdict is read. By one estimate, roughly eighty-five percent of the women in the state prison that would receive her already carry a mental health diagnosis — and the facility has been operating since 1877, the oldest women's prison in the country. Federal investigators documented how the Massachusetts system responds when inmates reach psychiatric crisis, and the findings involved isolation, not treatment.
