At least nine psychiatric medications in the months before her children died. Eight of them prescribed in a three-week window. No coordinated care plan between providers. That is what the lawsuits filed by both Patrick and Lindsay Clancy allege against the doctors, nurse practitioners, and health systems that treated her.

Lindsay’s own lawsuit alleges she was suffering from undiagnosed Bipolar I disorder with postpartum onset and that her providers’ uncoordinated prescribing caused the psychotic break. The criminal trial at Plymouth Superior Court ended in a mistrial with the jury deadlocked eleven to one.

Dueling psychiatric experts at trial gave the jury irreconcilable testimony about her mental state. The prosecution’s experts said she appreciated what she was doing. The defense’s experts said psychosis made that impossible.

Bob Motta of Defense Diaries examines the medication timeline, the civil lawsuits, and why the medical system’s role in this tragedy may only get a full hearing in a malpractice courtroom.
