How Donna and Charlie Adelson Talked Themselves Into Murder

Prosecutor Georgia Cappleman stood in front of a Tallahassee jury on September 4, 2025, and put the theory of Donna and Charlie Adelson's relationship in two sentences: "She managed Charlie's life for him, and in return he solved problems for her." "He cared about getting things done for the number one woman in his life — and that was his mother."

Financial investigator Mary Hull agreed at trial that Donna handled Charlie's hotels, flights, and bills. His brother Robert testified Charlie was "somewhat dependent on my mom" and "always needed more attention than the other two children." Charlie worked at the family dental practice. Donna ran it. He never married. She remained the organizing woman in his life into his forties. When a judge denied the relocation of Wendi's children and Donna couldn't sleep or eat, that became Charlie's job to fix.

Katherine Magbanua testified Charlie would step out of the room, consult his mother, then come back and speak to her. The family ran on cutouts. The conspiracy inherited the org chart. Magbanua said the payoff cash was damp — Charlie told her Donna had washed it in a machine. Then Donna signed forty-four checks to Magbanua from the dental practice.

After Charlie's conviction, he made eighty-six calls to his mother. More than thirty-five hours in one week. On one call, after Charlie dropped off the line, Donna said she wanted to die rather than live without her son. Same call: she was looking up which countries had no extradition treaty.
