Caleb Flynn Trial Day 2: Detective Bernard Searched WHERE for the Gun?!

Day 2 of the Caleb Flynn murder trial moved from the original crime scene into the evidence work that followed. Tipp City Police Detective Adam Bernard testified about collection efforts in the days after Ashley Flynn's death, including electronic data obtained through a Microsoft search warrant. 

The firearm search became a major point on cross-examination. Bernard testified that he personally spent tens of hours searching the Flynn home for the gun investigators were trying to locate. He said police also searched sewer drains, pushing that search well beyond the obvious places inside the house. 

Bernard also addressed tips that came into the investigation. He testified that he collected tip reports and forwarded them to the FBI. When defense counsel asked what happened after that handoff, Bernard said he did not know whether those tips were followed up on. Sending information onward and knowing what was done with it are two separate steps, and Bernard could only account for the first. 

Bernard also testified that investigators collected electronic data under a Microsoft search warrant. That portion of his testimony established another category of evidence gathered after the incident, while cross-examination focused more heavily on the firearm search and tip reports. 

Caleb Flynn has pleaded not guilty to charges in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors allege he killed Ashley and staged the home to resemble a burglary. The defense maintains that Ashley was killed during a home invasion and that investigators rushed to focus on Caleb. 

Bernard's testimony gave both sides something to work with. The prosecution can point to the hours devoted to the firearm search and the collection of digital evidence. The defense can point to the uncertainty surrounding what happened to outside tips after they were forwarded, and ask the jury how completely alternative leads were actually tested.
