Trial Of Caleb Flynn Day 2: Hammond Says Evidence Pointed to WHAT?!

Special Agent David Hammond resumed Day 2 testimony in the Caleb Flynn murder trial by walking jurors through evidence collected after Ashley Flynn was found dead in the family's Tipp City home. After the mid-morning break, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation agent identified bullet fragments recovered from Ashley and additional fragments collected at the scene. 

Hammond also testified about latent prints gathered during the investigation. He did not turn that discussion into a claim that a particular print proved who killed Ashley. The significance of those prints depends on the analysis and the arguments the jury ultimately hears about them. 

Caleb Flynn, 40, is charged with 11 counts, including aggravated murder, and has pleaded not guilty. The prosecution alleges Caleb killed his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37, and staged the house to make the killing look like a burglary. His defense maintains that an intruder was responsible and says investigators rushed to judgment against Caleb. 

Near the end of this stretch of testimony, prosecutors asked Hammond about the conclusion he reached after working the investigation. Hammond told jurors he believed the incident was a homicide and that the burglary scene had been staged. His statement is an investigative opinion offered by a prosecution witness, and the jury will decide what weight to give it. 

That conclusion follows the same lane Hammond had been building through the morning. He had already testified that the garage-door damage did not resemble forced-entry scenes he had investigated. After the break, prosecutors added the collected fragments and latent-print evidence before asking him to connect his observations into an overall assessment. 

The state is using Hammond's scene work to support its staging allegation. The defense's home-invasion theory requires jurors to decide whether his interpretation is supported by the evidence or reflects the investigative tunnel vision the defense says shaped this case.
