A piece of the alleged point of entry came into the courtroom as jurors heard more testimony about Caleb Flynn's home-invasion claim. Det. Brad Kline said investigators removed the damaged garage access door frame and reassembled it in court so its condition could be examined during his testimony.
Flynn has pleaded not guilty to the charges filed in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn, 37. The defense says an intruder killed Ashley during a burglary; prosecutors allege Caleb staged the scene to make it look that way.
Kline testified that broken-lock debris was found inside the garage. Drawing on his experience as a former DEA officer who had seen many kicked-in doors, he said the damage was not consistent with someone forcing the door from the outside. He also took part in searching the attic for the gun and said the amount of insulation made a thorough search impossible in some areas. Cross-examination focused on those limits: Kline acknowledged no X-ray machine was brought in to search the walls, some attic spaces were inaccessible, and neighbors said they heard nothing that night.
Miami County Sheriff's Lt. Jason Moore gave a similar opinion about the door. He testified that the damage and broken handle looked incongruent with an outside forced entry and used the courtroom door setup to explain why. Moore also described repeated searches of vents, the residence, and the surrounding property using cameras, magnets, and other devices. On cross, he said the repeated searches reflected an effort to keep expanding the search when earlier attempts did not locate the item investigators were seeking.
